Drafty Rooms in Winter

Drafty rooms in winter almost always point to one thing: heat is escaping through your attic before it ever reaches the living space below. When attic insulation is thin, old, or missing in spots, cold air finds its way in and warm air finds its way out – and you feel it most in the rooms closest to the ceiling, the exterior walls, or anywhere near an air gap that connects to the attic above. It’s not a mystery, and it’s not unfixable.

Here’s what’s actually going on. Your attic is the thermal lid of your house. When that lid has gaps – whether from insulation that’s settled and compacted over the years, air leaks around ceiling penetrations, or material that was never installed correctly in the first place – the barrier between your heated living space and the cold outdoors is weaker than it should be. Your heating system works harder, your energy bills climb, and certain rooms stay stubbornly cold no matter how high you push the thermostat. The fix almost always starts in the attic.

Why It Happens

Insulation That Has Settled or Thinned Over Time

Loose-fill insulation – blown fiberglass or cellulose – compresses under its own weight over years. What started as a proper depth of coverage can shrink to a fraction of what it once was, losing its ability to slow heat transfer. You can often confirm this yourself: if you can see the tops of your ceiling joists from your attic hatch without digging through insulation, you almost certainly don’t have enough coverage. That exposed wood is a heat highway straight out of your home.

Air Leaks Around Attic Penetrations

Insulation slows the movement of heat, but air leaks bypass it entirely. Every electrical box, recessed light, plumbing vent, and HVAC chase that punches through your ceiling is a potential gap, and in most homes built before the mid-2000s, those gaps were never properly sealed. You’ll sometimes notice this as a cold “draft” near a light fixture or an interior wall – not a breeze from outside, but cold attic air that has found a path into your living space.

Spray Foam That Has Pulled Away from the Structure

Open-cell spray foam is flexible and breathable, which is a feature – but it can pull away from wood framing or roof decking as a structure settles over years. Closed-cell foam holds better but can also develop small cracks where it contacts irregular surfaces. If a room that was comfortable after an insulation job a few years ago has turned cold again, this kind of separation is worth having a technician look at. You won’t be able to see it without getting into the attic, but it’s a known failure mode.

Coverage Gaps from a Previous Install

Not every insulation job is done right the first time. Corners, eave bays, and the narrow spaces near exterior walls are easy to skip or underserve during an install, and those are exactly the spots that produce cold rooms and drafty perimeter walls. If certain rooms are consistently colder than others – especially rooms over a garage or under a vaulted ceiling – that pattern points to uneven coverage, not a heating problem.

What to Do Right Now

  • Look at your attic hatch or access panel. If you can open it safely from below, shine a flashlight in and note whether you can see the tops of the ceiling joists. If you can, the insulation depth is almost certainly below code minimums. Photograph what you see – it’s useful information for your technician.
  • Check for drafts around ceiling fixtures and recessed lights. Hold your hand near the fixture on a cold day. If you feel a chill or notice the area around it is noticeably colder than the surrounding ceiling, you likely have an air sealing problem above it.
  • Do not try to add insulation yourself in the attic near the eaves or around electrical penetrations. Blocking soffit ventilation or covering junction boxes creates real hazards – one involves moisture damage to your roof structure, the other is a fire risk. Mark the areas you noticed and let the technician handle those spots.
  • Note which rooms feel coldest and at what time of day. Rooms that are cold in the morning but warm up later may have a different root cause than rooms that stay cold all day. That pattern helps narrow down whether air leakage or insulation depth is the bigger factor.
  • Don’t crank the thermostat and assume the problem is resolved. If the thermal barrier in your attic is compromised, your heating system will run longer cycles but the underlying heat loss doesn’t stop. You’ll spend more and stay uncomfortable until the attic is addressed.

How We Fix It

When your local Woolsey Attic Insulation team arrives, the first thing they do is get into the attic – not just glance at it. They measure the existing insulation depth at multiple points, check for air gaps around penetrations, and look for signs of moisture or prior damage that could affect what material performs best in your home.

From there, the fix depends on what they find. If the insulation has thinned and compacted, blown-in attic insulation is usually the right answer – materials like Owens Corning, Knauf, GreenFiber, or Johns Manville can be added over existing coverage quickly and effectively. If air leaks are part of the problem, spray foam – products like Icynene or Demilec work well here – is used to seal penetrations before new insulation goes on top. Most jobs are completed in a single visit.

Before any of that starts, you’ll have a written price in hand. That’s not a rough estimate and not a range – it’s the number, in writing, before anyone picks up a tool. The 365-Day Done Right Promise means that if something isn’t right after we leave, we come back and fix it at no charge. No runaround, no invoice for the return visit.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★ 4.8 from 5+ reviews

"Insulation job was done well. Scheduling took a little longer than I'd have liked, they were booked out a couple weeks. But once they came it was quick and the house is cozier."

- Felicia Grant

"The guy didn't try to sell me on foaming the whole house. He said the attic was where I'd actually feel it and left it at that. Honest, and he was right, our bills dropped."

- Angela Ruiz

"Drafty old house that never felt comfortable. After the attic and some air sealing it's a different place. On time, clean, and the quote didn't change. Wish I'd done it years ago."
