How Much Insulation Do I Need?

What’s Happening

The amount of insulation your attic needs depends on where you live, what’s already up there, and what R-value your climate zone requires. Most homes built before the mid-1990s are under-insulated by current standards, and adding the right depth of the right material is almost always the fix.

R-value is the trade term for how well insulation resists heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better the thermal barrier. Energy codes in most parts of the country now call for R-38 to R-60 in the attic, depending on climate zone. Many older homes sit at R-11 or R-19 – sometimes less. If your heating and cooling system is working hard and rooms still feel uneven, your attic is usually the first place to look. It’s not always a dramatic problem you can see from the street; it’s a slow, steady energy drain you feel in your utility bills and your comfort every single day.

Why It Happens

Your home was built to an older standard

Building codes for attic insulation have changed significantly over the decades. A house that passed inspection in 1978 or even 1995 may have far less insulation than current standards recommend. If you pull down the attic hatch and the insulation barely covers the ceiling joists – or you can see the joists clearly above the insulation – you’re looking at an under-insulated attic. That’s the most common thing we find when a homeowner calls asking exactly this question.

Existing insulation has settled or degraded

Blown-in insulation, whether fiberglass or cellulose, compresses over time. What started as six inches can settle to three or four inches and lose a meaningful portion of its R-value in the process. If the insulation in your attic looks flat, dusty, or matted down rather than fluffy and loose, settling is likely the culprit. The depth may look acceptable at a glance, but the actual performance is lower than it appears.

Air sealing gaps are letting conditioned air escape

Insulation slows heat transfer, but gaps around recessed lights, plumbing penetrations, and attic hatches let conditioned air move right through by convection – which insulation alone can’t stop. If one room in your home is consistently warmer or colder than the others, or you notice your system running longer than it used to, air leakage through the attic floor is often contributing. A technician will spot these penetrations during a proper attic assessment.

A previous job was installed unevenly or incorrectly

Not all insulation work is done well. Batts stuffed into odd angles, blown material that’s thinner near the eaves, or insulation that was pushed aside during a renovation and never restored – these are more common than most homeowners expect. If you know work was done in the past but you’re still seeing comfort or energy problems, the installation itself may be the issue rather than the age of the home.

What to Do Right Now

  • Check the attic hatch or access panel safely from the opening. You don’t need to crawl in. Look at whether the insulation is flush with or above the ceiling joists, and take a photo. Joists visible above the insulation surface mean the depth is low.
  • Note which rooms feel off. Write down the rooms that are hardest to keep comfortable, and whether the problem is worse in summer or winter. This helps a technician zero in on the likely problem areas fast.
  • Check the attic hatch itself. The hatch cover is often bare drywall with nothing behind it – an uninsulated hole in an otherwise insulated ceiling. If yours feels thin or hollow, make a note of it.
  • Look at your utility bills for the past 12 months. A year-over-year pattern of rising energy use, without a change in habits, is one of the clearest signs of thermal performance loss. Pull those numbers before you call – they’re useful information.
  • Don’t add insulation yourself before getting an assessment. Piling material on top of existing insulation without sealing air gaps first, or without knowing the current R-value, can trap moisture and create problems that cost more to fix later. Get the picture first.

How We Fix It

When your local Woolsey Attic Insulation team arrives, the first thing they do is a thorough attic assessment – measuring current depth, checking for air leaks, looking at ventilation, and identifying any moisture or previous installation problems. Before any material goes in, you get a written price. That’s not a rough estimate with wiggle room; it’s the number, in writing, and it doesn’t change when work starts.

Depending on what the assessment turns up, the solution is typically attic insulation, spray foam insulation, or a combination of both. Spray foam handles air sealing around penetrations and irregular cavities; blown-in or batt insulation brings the R-value up to the right depth. Woolsey works with eight brands – Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Knauf, Rockwool, CertainTeed, Icynene, Demilec, and GreenFiber – so the recommendation is based on your attic’s actual conditions, not whatever’s already on the truck.

Most attic insulation jobs are completed in a single visit. The work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right within 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge.

What Our Customers Say

★★★★★ 4.8 from 5+ reviews

"The guy didn't try to sell me on foaming the whole house. He said the attic was where I'd actually feel it and left it at that. Honest, and he was right, our bills dropped."

- Angela Ruiz

"Drafty old house that never felt comfortable. After the attic and some air sealing it's a different place. On time, clean, and the quote didn't change. Wish I'd done it years ago."

- Dmitri Kozlov

"Spray foam in the crawlspace and new attic insulation. They wrote up the whole price and the two jobs came in exactly as quoted. Floors upstairs aren't freezing in the morning anymore."

- Nathan Pruitt
