GreenFiber Attic Insulation Nationwide

GreenFiber Attic Insulation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install GreenFiber attic insulation throughout Los Angeles, with most attic insulation jobs running between $1,800 and $4,200 depending on square footage and existing insulation condition. We carry GreenFiber cellulose and fiberglass blown-in products on our trucks, so same-day or next-day installation is usually available. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover their insulation has failed the hard way: the upstairs runs 8 to 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house in August, the AC never cycles off, and the attic feels like a convection oven when you pop your head up there. If that sounds familiar, your GreenFiber insulation has likely settled, gotten damp, or was never dense enough in the first place.

We’re an independent insulation contractor, not a GreenFiber subsidiary or authorized dealer. That means we stock GreenFiber because it performs well in Southern California attics, not because a brand agreement tells us to. Glenn Hartley, who runs Woolsey Attic Insulation, grew up in the San Fernando Valley watching older Reseda houses lose half their cooling to poorly insulated attics. That stuck with him. Today half of what we do in Los Angeles is fixing insulation that underperforms, and GreenFiber is one of the eight brands we trust enough to put our name behind.

Good insulation doesn’t shout, it just quietly does its job, season after season.

Which GreenFiber Models This Applies To

GreenFiber makes two product lines that matter in Los Angeles attics: cellulose blown-in insulation (their SANCTUARY and standard cellulose lines) and fiberglass blown-in insulation. The cellulose products are made from up to 85% recycled paper treated with borate for fire and pest resistance. The fiberglass line, often labeled as GreenFiber Insulation specific to certain big-box retailers, has different coverage specs. If you’re not sure which you have, check for a manufacturer label on the attic floor or a receipt from the original install. No label? Cellulose looks like dense, gray, almost fluffy newsprint, while fiberglass blown-in is lighter, usually pink or white, and has a cottony texture.

The real compatibility gotcha in Los Angeles isn’t brand, it’s depth. Many LA homes built before 1990 were insulated to R-19 or less, which is roughly 6 inches of cellulose. Current California energy code (Title 24) wants R-38 or higher in most attics, which is 10 to 12 inches of GreenFiber cellulose. When we add GreenFiber to an existing attic, we don’t need to match the old product exactly as long as we know what’s already there. If the existing insulation has rodent damage, moisture staining, or has compressed to half its original depth, we typically recommend removal. Otherwise, topping off is usually the smart money.

We also stock Reflectix radiant barrier products for Los Angeles homeowners who want to combine GreenFiber blown-in insulation with a radiant barrier under the roof deck, which matters a lot when attic temps hit 140°F in July.

Signs Your GreenFiber Attic Insulation Is Failing

  • Upstairs rooms run 8 to 10 degrees warmer than downstairs. This is the number one call we get in Los Angeles, especially in Valley neighborhoods like Northridge, Reseda, and Woodland Hills. Heat rises, and when attic insulation is thin or settled, the upstairs absorbs all of it.
  • Your AC runs constantly in summer and your bill climbs every year. Los Angeles Department of Water and Power rates keep rising. If your usage is up year over year and your insulation is original to the house, the insulation has likely settled and lost R-value. Cellulose settles about 10 to 15% over its first decade if installed loose.
  • You can see joists or drywall seams through the insulation. A healthy GreenFiber cellulose attic should have a consistent, even blanket. Bare spots around the eaves, wiring holes, or recessed lights mean air is moving through the attic floor, which cuts the insulation’s effectiveness dramatically.
  • Rooms near the edges of the house feel drafty in winter. Wind-washing across the attic floor compresses or displaces blown-in insulation, especially near soffit vents. We see this constantly in Los Angeles homes near the foothills and passes where Santa Ana winds push air through attics.
  • Damp insulation or a musty smell near the attic hatch. Los Angeles doesn’t get much rain, but condensation from HVAC ducts, bathroom fans venting into the attic, or roof leaks all wet cellulose. Wet GreenFiber loses its R-value almost entirely and should be removed, not dried. Borate treatment helps prevent mold, but it doesn’t make wet insulation perform.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical 1,200 to 1,800 square foot Los Angeles attic, adding GreenFiber cellulose to bring the attic from R-19 up to R-38 runs $1,800 to $2,800. A full removal of old, damaged insulation plus new GreenFiber usually lands between $3,200 and $4,200 depending on access, pitch, and the condition of what’s up there. Homes with tight attic access, second-story attics, or lots of recessed lighting can push higher, and we’ll tell you that before we schedule anything.

Every quote from Woolsey Attic Insulation includes materials, labor, air sealing around penetrations if you want it, and full cleanup after the job. We give you a written price before any work starts, through the Kingswell way of doing things: you get the number, we show up in the committed window, we leave the job site cleaner than we found it, and the work is covered for 365 days in writing. If it’s not right within that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the promise, and it’s specific, not hand-wavy.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do a few things yourself: look up into the attic with a flashlight and check for bare spots, measure the depth of insulation in a few places, check for dampness after a rain, and verify that bathroom fans actually vent outside, not into the attic. None of that requires special gear beyond a ladder and a dust mask.

Actually blowing in GreenFiber cellulose is a different story. You need a blower machine capable of 60 to 80 pounds per hour feed rate, proper dust control, and a second person in the attic to direct the hose. You also need to know how to keep insulation out of soffit vents and off recessed light housings without creating a fire hazard. We’ve fixed enough DIY blow-in jobs in Los Angeles to know that rental blowers from the big-box stores often clog, underperform, and leave you with uneven coverage that’s worse than what you started with. If you want it done once and done right, call us at (325) 240-5411 and we’ll handle it.
